Balancing Acts' Visual Arts Series
As a result of the collaborative efforts of Stage Left, In-Definite Arts Society and Studio C, the Balancing Acts’ Visual Arts Series has grown exponentially over the past three years. In response to this growth, Balancing Acts is pleased to announce the introduction of a jury to our artist selection process. Three professional, disabled visual artists from across Canada review submitted materials and select artists for exhibition.

The Balancing Acts’ Visual Art Series is an opportunity to examine and explore the spectrum of visual art that is created by artists who are disabled. Our goal is to significantly increase an understanding of, and appreciation for, how visual art work is contributing to one of the fastest-growing artistic movements on the global stage:  the disability art and culture movement – an international movement of disabled artists whose objective is to represent the lived experience of disability as complex, dynamic, and infused with a range of experiences that include hopes and dreams, self-worth and autonomy, sexuality and relationships, and social barriers to disability.

Visual artists are therefore encouraged to use the Balancing Acts’ Visual Art Series as an opportunity to take risks, push boundaries, challenge mainstream perceptions of disability, experiment, and celebrate the lived experience of disability.

Visual Art Awards
Balancing Acts is pleased to offer a ‘Best of Show’ award for both of its arts calls - Traditional and Disability Art. Jurors submit recommendations to Balancing Acts for this distinguished award and selected artists receive a cash prize and an award certificate.

The public also has the opportunity to select an artist for ‘People’s Choice’ award at each venue. Congratulations to all the award recipients of 2009!

Information about 2010 Visual Arts Series will become available later this year.
